National Nutrition Month: A Time to Recognize Nutritionists & Food Service Workers

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics observes March as National Nutrition Month to help raise awareness of healthy eating habits. Healthy food provides nutrients that are important for maintaining and improving physical health and mental well-being. This month, the HERO Program recognizes frontline food service workers who support employee and patient care through their work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care settings.

The jobs of food service workers have changed dramatically since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released several updated food safety and sanitation guidelines since the start of the pandemic, with food service workers adjusting swiftly as part of their work routine. From wearing personal protective equipment like masks and gloves while in the healthcare setting, to following strict sanitation rules, food service workers protect themselves and their patrons while tirelessly providing essential meals and nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The HERO Registry thanks those in the food service industry who play a vital role in the healthcare system, and who have continued to care for both healthcare workers and patients during this pandemic. Nutritionists and food service workers who work in health care settings are invited to join the HERO Registry. HERO members share their experiences to help us understand what it is like to work on the front lines during this public health crisis. In addition, HERO members have opportunities to participate in research to help protect and support all healthcare workers during this pandemic.

Join the HERO Registry. HERO Registry members who have received or are planning on receiving a vaccine can join HERO-TOGETHER. By taking part, healthcare workers can provide real-time safety information to understand how different people do after vaccination.
